BONITA BANDARIES | AUTHOR MEDIA

About the Author:

Bonita Bandaries always believed she would be writing children’s books after retiring as an educator and counselor. During her career she enjoyed teaching writing to students and instructing teachers in developing writing skills in their students. However, after becoming full-time caregiver for her mother, Bonita’s writing interest focused on encouraging other caregivers experiencing the challenges of caring for loved ones.

Bonita's Books:

Bonita Bandaries is an author from Shreveport, LA. She published her memoir, A Promise Kept, in 2011 after caring for her mother. Bonita understands the challenges caregivers face and suggests strategies and tips for caring for yourself in order to give the best care to your loved one. Her purpose in writing this book and those to follow is best stated in the scripture: “. . .encourage each other and give each other strength. . .”
(1 Thessalonians 5:11

In 2013, Una Promesa Cumplida, the Spanish translation of A Promise Kept, was released.

A Promise Kept Inspirational Guide for Family Caregivers, published in 2015 is a study guide inspired by A Promise Kept. The book addresses needs of those caring for aging parents, siblings, spouses, or other loved ones with debilitating illnesses or physical disabilities. Caregiving can become overwhelming and cause stress, fatigue, and burnout. Respite care is crucial for staying healthy mentally, physically and emotionally. The guide offers ideas for finding time in the day to rest, exercise, participate in hobbies, or spend time with family and friends. The book is a companion piece to A Promise Kept, but may be used alone or in support groups.

In October 2016, Reflections, A Promise Kept Journal was released.  This undated, blank journal is a good tool for caregivers to keep reminders of appointments, medications, notes of daily activities or simply writing what is on your heart at any moment. Journaling is a great stress reliever.

Recipes That Warm the Heart, A Promise Kept Cookbook, is a collection of recipes and stories contributed by family and friends. It is a “taste” of older Americans preserving slices of history and tradition through food and stories. The book, part cookbook and part memoir, was launched in 2017 in May, a month dedicated to older Americans who inspire us with memories of food, family, and tradition.

Bonita’s desire to encourage family caregivers motivates her organizing community events each year to educate caregivers and recognize them for their contributions in caring for loved ones. These began in 2013 in November, National Family Caregivers Month. Last year she hosted Caregivers Conference 2017 in May.  These events are free and opportunities for caregivers to obtain information about community resources and educational materials.
